Maritime Safety
The Border Guard is the leading search and rescue (SAR) authority at sea and a maritime law enforcement authority with a variety of duties. The Border Guard is responsible for SAR at sea when human lives or the environment are in danger. SAR at sea missions are coordinated by maritime rescue coordination centres (MRCC) and subcentres (MRCS). Maritime SAR covers duties such as assisting ships and boats in distress, accident prevention, searches for missing persons and transport of ill and injured persons from islands and the sea. The Border Guard’s duties also include the surveillance of Finland's sea areas, supervision of traffic at sea and prevention of damage to the maritime environment. In these duties we cooperate with the Finnish Maritime Administration, Defence Forces and environmental authorities. Back | Print page |
