Patrol vessel Tursas in a modern multifunctional vessel that can perform duties assigned for the Border Guard all year round in all weather conditions in the Baltic Sea. The main duties include maintaining border security, ie surveillance of the sea border and fishing waters together with other Border Guard units. In its area of surveillance, Tursas carries out various functions, such as surveillance of waterborne traffic and fishing, and urgent tasks that maintain public order and security.

The vessel can take part in long-durating (last over 14 days) EU operations in the Baltic Sea.

When offshore, the vessel is in 24 h readiness to take part in maritime search and rescue efforts and many different types of search and rescue missions are carried out by the crew. The vessel also has good facilities for and On-Scene Co-ordinator to work during a mission.

The vessel has equipment to participate in oil destruction measures and operate in the area of chemical accident. The acquisition of the oil destrcution equipment has been a joint effort with Finland’s environmental administration. The vessel is also capable of underwater search efforts by a remote operated vehicle (ROV), among others.

Tursas can be used in national defence together with the Defence Forces.
